Back in the Days

Back in the Days
With inspiration from the images of black life in the Deep South portrayed in photojournalist Leonard Freed`s book, BLACK IN WHITE AMERICA, Jamel Shabazz took to the streets armed with a Kodak 110 Instamatic camera in the early 1980s. His hobby rapidly grew into a chronicle of 1980s Brooklyn street life black and white street photography and fashion. In BACK IN THE DAYS, a collection of Shabazz`s `80s photographs, members of the nascent hip-hop community in Brooklyn display street culture at its most vigorous black and white street photography and lively. Mostly in their teens black and white street photography and twenties, his subjects pose unselfconsciously for the camera clad in the fashions of the day--short-length shearling coats for the women, black and white street photography and caps, sweaters, black and white street photography and Adidas sneakers for the men. They display outsized spectacles black and white street photography and much jewelry, as well as massive boom-boxes presumably blasting the ubiquitous `80s New York radio DJ, Frankie Hollywood Crocker. But, as vigorous, lively, black and white street photography and carefree as these photographs appear, they capture the last days of a black community about to be ravaged by the early-`80s crack cocaine epidemic black and white street photography and AIDS. In a chilling black and white street photography and poignant postscript, Shabazz notes that many of those portrayed here died just a few years later. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005.
